8.2 Slavery in Kentucky

Pre-Visit
Students read and discuss a section of a textbook that deals with slavery. Students determine whether they think the textbook "paints" an accurate picture of what slavery was really like.

Students poll other students in their class and display the results of class:
Yes, the book tells the real story.
No, the book does not tell the real story.

In the Museum
Students stand on the auction block. Students read from narratives written by enslaved persons. Students view slave quarters. Students read excerpts presenting different perspectives. Students learn about the Underground Railroad and the people that participated on it.

Post-Visit
Students write pieces about their feelings as they relate to their experiences at the Center. Students discuss how different perspectives cause different responses to community problems. Students may write letters to the editor to express their perspectives and solutions to slavery.
