8.12 More Stories 8.12 of Triumph

Pre-Visit
Students make a list of famous African Americans from Kentucky. Students put the list of names on the chalkboard and as a class discuss what each one is noted for. Students may research on the Internet or in the library (with teacher approval) to discover additional names to add to the list. Students may create areas of expertise to categorize the names on the list (e.g., education, politics, the arts, entertainment, religion, sports.).

In the Museum
Students access stories related to people, places, and events significant to Kentucky’s African American history. Students search for names listed on the Pre-Visit activity. Students recognize the “rivers crossed” in order to reach the “Triumph” Gallery.

Post-Visit
Students interview family members who remember events related to the African Americans listed in the classroom activity or in the “Triumph” Gallery. Students share information with the class. Students may write a feature article about one of the persons on the list.
