8.11 Change Over Time

Pre-Visit
Students discuss how people and their circumstances change over time and how people’s perspectives or points of view change over time. Students get into small groups to discuss change over time in the following areas: war, military, education, civil rights, etc.

In the Museum
Students find areas in the Center that show change in the African American experience. Students encounter a time line of events from the 1890s to the 1950s. Students recognize the struggles and achievements that occurred in black communities in Kentucky. Students understand the difficulty involved with affecting change in society and culture.

Post-Visit
Students create a time line that shows the change in the African American experience in Kentucky. Place at least seven major events on the time line. Students may write a cause–and-effect paragraph discussing the causes of change in the African American experience. Students may illustrate, through various media, change over time in a local African American community.
