Here are some of the features we expect to welcome to the center:
• Multipurpose space in the “Great Hall” of the trolley barn that is flexible enough to accommodate special exhibits during the day, such as the Kentucky Black Jockeys and the Underground Railroad, and musical and performance-art events during the evening.
• Permanent “core” exhibit space that honors and celebrates the region’s African-American community through images and objects as well as audio-visual media.
• A historical research and genealogy resource center, reading room and listening room, where the collective memory of Kentucky’s African Americans can be shared with visitors. Visitors will even be able to trace their roots here — perhaps all the way back to Africa. The president of Ghana has already pledged his support.
• Studio space for arts and crafts programs, with an emphasis on interaction among different generations.
• A gift shop where African-American books, crafts and souvenirs can be purchased.
• Commercial retail stores and possibly a café conveying an Afro-Centric theme.
