The issues and tensions that led to the Civil War were heightened in Kentucky, a border state.
The first component of this area immerses visitors in the debate over Kentucky situation, and illustrates the blatant irony typical of the period.
The debate was about slavery, but the opinions of the enslaved themselves were ignored. Adjacent to this area, visitors note that African-Americans have served with honor and distinction in wars from the Revolutionary War to the present.
